USMS Membership Renewal for Marin Pirates Masters

If you’re here…

there is a strong possibility you are one of those crazy people that loves the water and thinks chlorine is a perfume!

If so, you’ll find a home with us. We are a masters swim team based in Marin County, California, and we are members of Pacific Masters Swimming and US Masters Swimming. The Marin Pirates Masters are a fun loving team that welcomes all levels of swimmers – from the very novice to the seasoned veteran. Whether you are a lap swimmer, a triathlete looking to improve your swim leg, or a competitor of pool meets or open water swims, you will fit right in with our team. If you can swim even a little freestyle, our friendly and skilled coaches can help improve your stroke, teach you new strokes, make practices fun, and keep you in the water, hopefully swimming for life.

We work out at the Indian Valley Campus Pool in Novato, California, and we currently offer 7 workouts per week with a long course workout (50 meters) on many Saturdays throughout the year and short course workouts (25 yards) on weekdays. See the overview of our practice schedule under the About tab at the top of the screen. Or, check out our Calendar tab to see specific dates, swim meets, open water swims, or other team events.

You don’t have to compete to be on our team and you don’t have to be fast! Come give us a try!

I hope to see you at the pool!

I’m interested in your workouts. I was a competitive swimmer in my younger days, and thinking of getting back into it. Please give me more info about workouts etc.
Thanks!

Ann – thanks for your note. Glad to hear you are thinking about getting back into swimming. Many of those on our team were swimmers as kids and just now returning to the sport. We fondly remember the fun times we had as a youth! What is it you’d like to know about our workouts? Our workouts our varied and rarely do you find yourself repeating a workout or even a set. In one week we try to cover all four strokes, get some middle distance or distance free in, and get some speed work in. Each week we target something, a certain stroke, conditioning, pacing, walls, streamline, etc. and we work in sets that focus on our target. We also taper for competitive meets and build up yardage for our open water swimmers. Dues paying team members also have access to all written workouts in electronic form, which is about 300 at current count. So if they can’t make practice, or liked a particular workout, they can have access to that workout.

Coach Cokie,

I would like to become a Pirate and compete with your team. I am a member of PAC Masters, and unafiliated. I am a friend of Cassandra, and swim with her at the JCC and the masters group with Coach Charlotte. I would try to come to the Pirates, on a drop in basis, at least once a week Fri. or Sat. Would you please send me the paper work so that I can sign up.

Hi – this is Gary Emich – event director for two upcoming benefit swims that may be of interest to your swim team members.

The first, the TransBay Relay Benefit Swim (from the Golden Gate Bridge to the Emeryville Marina), is a 9-mile, 3-person relay to raise money for San Francisco Baykeeper. San Francisco Baykeeper is the pollution watchdog for San Francisco Bay. Since 1989, Baykeeper has been holding polluters accountable and strengthening clean water laws for the benefit of the Bay’s water quality, wildlife and recreational users. Baykeeper is a 501c3 nonprofit organization. This swim will be held Saturday September 10, 2011. For more information or to register, your members can go to:

http://www.baykeeper.org/transbayrelay

The second fund raiser is for Swim Across America whose motto is “Making Waves to Fight Cancer.” Last year, the event raised $125,000 for UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital and another $125,000 for Children’s Hospital Oakland Research Institute. This 1.5 mile swim will be held on Saturday September 24, 2011 and goes from the center span of the Golden Gate Bridge into the East Beach of Crissy Field. Your members can find more information on this event at:

These are two unique events to support two unique organizations. Please feel free to contact me with any questions. I can be reached via email at SFBaySwimmer@sbcglobal.net or by phone 650.333.7387 – cell or 650.359.3773 office.

I greatly appreciate you spreading the word.

Hi! my name is Crystal Pinkston—I swam with Warren when i was on the College of Marin Swim team and I am now a student at Dominican University. I took a small break, and am now wanting to get back into swimming and doing some occassional meets again. What does it take to join the team? I am really interested in joining the master’s swim team. Please let me know some more information. I am looking at joing the master’s team to get back in shape, but to also use swimming as cross-training. Also, due to shoulder issues i am limited to freestyle—I LOVE long distance swimming–I did the mile for the COM team at meets. Looking forward to hearing more about the team. is there a requirement on how many days you attend practice?

Hi Cokie-
I love your website.
You are doing an amazing job with your team and I am very proud of you. You continue to push the envelope with your own learning and imparting knowledge to your swimmers. I love how you are constantly trying the latest things. I had just Googled Drag Sox and your link came up. Needless to say that once I saw that ‘Cokie is using them’ I ordered some!
See you soon,
Karen

Thank you Karen! I am experimenting with my DragSox this summer. Try doing all four strokes with them – a great thigh burner workout. Then, when you take them off, you feel so strong and efficient!

Coach Cokie,

I am looking for a swim coach to assist with proper stroke technique. I have a chronic shoulder injury and Ortho suggested getting a swim coach to improve performance and decrease injury. I also work with Cathy S. and Jeff F. and they speak VERY highly of you. What are my options?

thanks
Hope*
